Founded in 2024 by Sema Alaçam and Orkan Zeynel Güzelci, both of whom bring extensive experience in computational architectural design, the Advanced Research on Form Laboratory (arfLAB) stands as a pioneering research entity. arfLAB is committed to propelling the fields of architecture, design, and computational form forward. Our laboratory delves into the confluence of art, science, and technology to extend the frontiers of design and construction.

 

At arfLAB, our goal is to lead the way in innovation by fostering a collaborative environment where technology enhances creativity, resulting in groundbreaking advancements in the design and construction industries. We are continuously seeking to expand our team and welcome new talent; therefore, there might be open calls for positions within our laboratory. We highly value interdisciplinary collaboration and are always open to forming new partnerships and engaging in joint research projects. Whether you are a researcher, practitioner, or industry partner, we invite you to collaborate with us to push the boundaries of design and technology. Main Research Areas

  1. Algorithm & Fabrication:

    • Focuses on a wide range of studies, from rule-based structures to genetic algorithms and other advanced solutions.

    • Emphasizes algorithm-aided design and fabrication practices.

    • Designs and develops novel workflows for advanced digital fabrication processes.

    • Investigates computational models for sustainable, novel, and low-cost material design.

    • Examines use of industrial robots in digital fabrication. 

    • Explores the implications of these techniques in design education.

  2. Interaction Design & Interface:

    • Covers the development and application of new interaction forms within the contexts of design tools and game design.

    • Includes low-fidelity solutions for interface design.

    • Includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), mixed reality, blended reality, and other emerging interaction modalities.

  3. Design Studies:

    • Investigates how designers think, the role of analogy and metaphors in design, and nonverbal communication.

    • Explores gestural and bodily interaction within design processes.

    • Investigates methods and techniques that enhance creativity in design.
